bike parking.jpg

Please join us on February 28 at noon for a Lunch and Learn presented by Lou Fineberg of DERO. Anyone interested in learning more about bicycle parking is welcome to attend! American Institute of Architects (AIA) offering 1.0 LU/HSW credit hours to registered architect.

Course Description:

The growth of bicycle use for transportation and tourism has increased significantly in the past decade and as a result, deliberate attention to bicycle parking is needed now more than ever. Bicycle storage facilities have become an integral part of new developments and are touted as a premium asset in commercial and residential properties. This session provides a fundamental approach to comprehensive bicycle parking standards, from selecting the right equipment to adequately preparing the space. The Bicycle Parking Standards and Installation session provides the expertise to improve bike storage to meet the needs of both the developer and the end user.

Box lunch provided. This workshop is co-hosted by the Yay Bikes! and Dero.

Objectives

1. Describe the fundamental design features that create desirable bike parking facilities.

2. Use appropriate spacing standards for installation to allow for easy access for cyclists and their bicycles.

3. Identify the key considerations to meet ADA, LEED, and Parksmart standards.

4. Explain how to apply common guidelines of bike parking requirements

This year's exclusive beer label, designed by artist Thom Glicke.

Dick at Elevator Brewing Company, who sponsors an annual fundraiser to support Yay Bikes! and Franklinton Cycle Works, is asking us to do it again—without the tornado* this time!

The evening kicks off with a FREE ride from Goodale Park to Franklinton Cycle Works (FCW) and then the Elevator Brewery 13th Floor Taproom. We'll begin gathering at the park at 5:30pm, and leave at 6pm. Running late? Feel free to join us mid-ride at FCW (around 6:30). From there we'll converge on the Elevator Brewery (N 4th St location). Entrance here will be $10, which gets you a beer to pose with for our annual "mass cheers" photo at beer:30 (7:30pm). Then Dick will open the taproom and we can all hang out!

*A literal tornado warning occurred during our brief ride attempt on May 16!

Blessing of the Bicycles

Join us for a Blessing of the Bicycles at Summit on 16th United Methodist Church! Regardless your religious affiliation, you'll find something here to inspire you and rejuvenate your soul. Here's more about the event from our friends at the church:

Imagine you are riding a bicycle.

Where are you going?

Why are you going by bicycle?

Who is riding with you?

How does the world look to you?

We invite you to join us for an interfaith "Blessing of the Bicycles" ceremony, a celebration of our diverse cycling community and of our various experiences with bicycles.

This will be a time to reflect on the reasons folks in our community choose to bike and to talk about our view of the world from the seat of a bicycle. Remembering how biking has affected our lives and transformed our lifestyles, we will bless and encourage one another. Prayers and good thoughts will be offered for peace and safety in our streets and for respect among diverse modes of transportation.

And, through this time of blessing, we will declare that, regardless of motive, our decision to bike matters. It matters to the earth. It matters to our city. It matters to our bodies. It is a sacred decision.
