Yay Bikes! is pleased to provide our premier on-road bicycling education! During a How We Roll course, groups of up to 5 cyclists enjoy a casual ride through downtown Columbus that prepares them to safely and confidently navigate urban streets. Topics include bicycle traffic law, proper lane positioning and Q&A on any additional topic of interest.

Please read the FAQs below for our policies regarding registration, cancellation, inclement weather, etc. Then contact Meredith with additional questions!

Q: Where in Goodale Park do we meet?

A: We meet at the pink dot, in the parking lot directly across from the playgrounds and just south of the shelter house:

Q: What happens during the rides?

A: After introductions and a brief safety chat, we head out on the road and ride for a couple of miles at a time, stopping periodically for ride leaders to check in, discuss features of the route, process incidents that occur, answer questions and critique unsafe riding habits. We ride approximately 8 miles, then return to Goodale Park, where participants can ask final questions.

Q: What if I can't make it for the whole ride?

A: If you can't stick around until the ride concludes, please refrain from signing up for this ride. Ride leaders will not be available to escort participants back to start, with the exception of emergency situations. There will be another ride you can join soon!

Q: What should I bring with me?

A: Bring a helmet, a WORKING bicycle and, if it will get dark by the end of our ride, front and rear lights. Otherwise, just bring whatever will make you comfortable on the ride (e.g., phone, bottle of water, snacks, sunscreen, medication, etc.).

Q: Will there be someone available to help me fix/adjust my bicycle?

A: Unfortunately, no—our instructors cannot spend time making adjustments. If an instructor deems your bicycle unsafe or unrideable for ANY reason (e.g., low tire pressure, loose brakes or other parts, etc.) you will be asked to leave and re-register for a later class.

Q: How should I dress?

A: Wear whatever weather-appropriate clothing makes you comfortable! There is no need to wear cycling-specific clothing unless you want to. Helmets, however, are REQUIRED on this ride. And good quality gloves are highly recommended.

Q: What happens if the weather is bad?

A: We don't roll in thunderstorms or icy conditions, but we do roll in rain and light snow. Decisions regarding cancellations will be made and communicated by email within 2 hours of your ride. If there is no notification, you may assume that the ride is still on.

Q: What if I'm not a very strong cyclist?

A: How We Roll is paced according to the slowest rider in the group, and each ride features several stops for instruction. If you possess basic bike handling skills and can ride 8 miles within 2 hours, you should be fine. If you are concerned about your ability to complete the ride, you'll want to pay special attention to the bicycle you use. Bicycles that fit well and those that have thinner tires are easier to ride than those with a poor fit or thick, knobby tires. And inflating your tires with air can do wonders for your ease of ride!

Q: Can I bring my kid(s)?

A: We welcome young people who are riding with parents or caregivers who are members, possess basic bike handling skills and can comfortably ride 8 miles within 2 hours. In general, we recommend age 12 and up, but use your discretion! Please do make sure your kids are registered separately.
