All Yay Bikes! members now have the opportunity to join us on an educational 'How We Roll' ride. During your ride, you'll enjoy a casual ride through downtown Columbus (with several stops for conversation!) that prepares you to safely and confidently navigate traffic by bicycle. Topics include bicycle traffic law, proper lane positioning and more. See our FAQs, below, and contact Meredith with questions.
Act fast, because space is limited to 5 people per month! But we'll be offering this ride on each Final Friday throughout the year, so catch us next month if you don't get a spot!
Q: When does registration end?
A: If no one has registered by noon on the day of the ride, it will be cancelled. If at least one person has registered, the remaining spots will be available until 5pm that day.
Q: Where in Goodale Park do we meet?
A: We meet at the pink dot!
Q: What happens during the rides?
A: After introductions and a brief safety chat, we head out on the road and ride for a couple of miles at a time, stopping periodically for ride leaders to check in, discuss features of the route, process incidents that occur, answer questions and critique unsafe riding habits. We ride approximately 9 miles, then return to Goodale Park, where participants complete a short evaluation and ask final questions.
Q: What should I bring with me?
A: The only essentials are a helmet and a WORKING bicycle. Otherwise, just bring whatever will make you comfortable on the ride (e.g., phone, bottle of water, snacks, sunscreen, medication, etc.). We will provide a drawstring bag in which you can carry small items.
Q: Will there be someone available to help me fix/adjust my bicycle?
A: Unfortunately, no—our instructors cannot spend time making adjustments. If an instructor deems your bicycle unsafe or unrideable for ANY reason (e.g., low tire pressure, loose brakes or other parts, etc.) you will be asked to leave and re-register for a later class.
Q: What if I don't have a helmet?
A: We have helmets available to use free during the ride, just indicate your size during registration.
Q: How should I dress?
A: Wear whatever weather-appropriate clothing makes you comfortable (in winter this means WARM gloves)! There is no need to wear cycling-specific clothing unless you want to. Helmets, however, are REQUIRED on this ride.
Q: What happens if the weather is bad?
A: We don't roll in thunderstorms, but we do roll in rain. Decisions regarding cancellations will be made and communicated by email within 2 hours of your ride. If there is no notification, you may assume that the ride is still on; we will not refund or transfer the registration for no-shows.
Q: What if I'm not a very strong cyclist?
A: How We Roll is designed to accommodate riders of all ages and abilities. We pace according to the slowest rider in the group, and each ride features several stops for instruction.
Q: Can I bring my kid(s)?
A: We welcome young people who are riding with parents or caregivers who are members, possess basic bike handling skills and can ride 9 miles within 2 hours. In general, we recommend age 12 and up, but use your discretion!
